Are you passionate about designing engaging, intuitive and impactful products which help millions of learners fulfil their potential?

We’re looking for a highly-skilled Product Designer who shares our passion for empowering and inspiring teachers and students. Find out how you could help us transform the future of education…

About the role

This is an exciting time to join the Sparx Design Team. We’re a small team, but we’re proud that our varied and unique work helps make things better for millions of students across the world.

We work across the full product design lifecycle but also focus on specific parts of the process (UX, UI, UXR), when required. The team designs web apps, websites and emails, delivering everything from student learning interfaces to management systems for teachers. All of this across multiple products and audiences, so there’s always an exciting challenge at hand!

Whilst there is flexibility with the role, we're looking for you to be more office based to work in collaboration with the other creative teams across Sparx Learning. Our office really is exceptional, (the people, environment, culture, not to mention the complimentary wholesome, organic food cooked on-site), We believe that you’ll want to spend a large proportion of your working time there anyway!

What you will be doing:

  • Talking to our users: running research sessions to gain insights into user needs and behaviours, then combining these learnings with business requirements to help tackle exciting challenges in education.
  • Designing, testing and iterating: Applying UX design principles and creating quality innovative prototypes for testing and iteration.
  • Working collaboratively alongside other Designers, Engineers, Product Owners and Senior Leaders. Working within Agile scrum teams, to generate ideas and ensure your high quality designs translate into solutions that work for our users.
  • Turning prototypes into high quality web apps. Translating your prototypes into engaging, intuitive and responsive UIs
  • Adapting to changing priorities. Responding well to changes and feedback, pitching in to help wherever needed and working across a range of products, websites and emails.

Job requirements

You will have:

  • The desire to help improve the life chances of millions of young people!
  • Commercial experience in a Product Design, UX or UI Design role
  • Strong skills in UX Design: wireframing, prototyping, information architecture and journey mapping
  • Experience in UI Design, with a strong understanding of UI patterns, web accessibility and great attention to detail
  • Experience designing, conducting, analysing and responding to user research
  • Strong visual design skills, with the ability to deliver great looking, creative and engaging designs which follow brand guidelines when needed.
  • Great communication skills to effectively collaborate with a range of stakeholders, explain your ideas and thought processes
  • A proactive, supportive, open and empathetic approach to problem solving, sharing opinions, questioning approaches and responding to user research. You’ll be happy working at pace and pitching in wherever help is needed.
  • Curiosity, adaptability and an eagerness to learn quickly

These are great to have, but we’ll develop and teach you along the way:

  • Experience working in-house and in cross-functional teams
  • Experience using usage analytics to identify issues and review solution effectiveness. Experience using A/B or Multivariate testing
  • Understanding of UCD and Design Thinking
  • Demonstrable skills in visual hierarchy, colour theory and typography
  • Design experience in the Education sector
  • Experience working with brand identities and design systems
  • A basic understanding of front-end web technologies

Recruitment process:

  • Portfolio submission - please ensure your application does include a link to your design portfolio showcasing your work. We’d love to see what you can do.
  • Screening call - we’d like to get to know you first and understand your skills and experience. We tend to do this virtually by video using Google Meet.
  • Video interview - an opportunity to meet with the design team to delve deeper into your experience.
  • Office interview day - at this stage, you’ll have the opportunity to see our wonderful offices based in Exeter. You’ll meet some of the team at Sparx and undertake a technical task.

Not sure that you quite have this level of experience?

In a wide ranging role, we understand that applicants will be stronger in some areas than others. Sparx offers a collaborative, supportive and highly rewarding work environment where there is scope for development within the role, so if you think this is the case then we’d still love to hear from you. We’re also interested to hear from more senior Product Designers. If you fit either of these descriptions, please get in touch  and send us a message here - recruitment@sparx.co.uk
